Two pumps, two tanks, one sump

This is very common in fish rooms and pet stores and super easy to set up. Add more tanks if you want to, each tank gets it's own pump. Size of the pump doesn't matter. The water that's pumped into a fish tank overflows to the sump. Larger tanks get larger pumps. You can set up the flow specifically for each tank. Of course you need to have the capacity in your sump

Attached is what my LFS uses for about 20 tanks. It's about 4'X5'X3' LxWxH

Does each tank need it's own pump? Can you use one stronger pump and split the piping to each tank? I'm thinking this could cause a problem if your tanks have different heights.. any way around this?

Tanks are same height, weight, volume and dimension. I don't have to run it this way, just really curious if anyone HAS run it this way.
