Two questions for the plant experts (that means you)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would do some research on dry ferts. They may not be necessary for you tank, but I think it costed me $20 bucks for all the ferts I will need for god knows how long. All you really need to dose is KNO3, KH2PO4, and a micro mix. I syphon with my mouth too and you wont need to worry about them. If your worried about excel, diy co2 is really easy to set up and all it does is pump co2 in your tank. These fertalizers are basically chemicals that your plants need to survive, like KNO3 adds nitrate to your tank because if you have enough plants in there your fish wont be adding enough for them.

For the guys that siphon with their mouth get one of those siphon bulbs. I use one for a small siphon I use on a small tank. Attach it to the end and pump the bulb a few times and it starts the flow. This will cost you only $8-$10. You can find it on ebay.

haha sounds like you shouldnt be keeping plants, or fish for that matter. do you treat your water for chlorine/chloramine? there are plenty of other 'scary' chemicals out there that you should be more worried about. the stuff is safe, but i wouldnt go out and drink it just for schnitz and giggles either.

i add all kinds of stuff to my planted tanks, potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, mono potassium phosphate, chelated iron, trace minerals, and Excel. as far as i know i dont have cancer, havent gone mentally retarded, or started growing a third eyeball.

a little common sense goes a long way
LOL i burst out laughing when i read this. The media of today seems to have encouraged a trend in people of, Long scientific names = toxic while that's not nessicarily true.

IMO dose a micro mix and that's all you need your plants should be getting enough phosphorus and nitrogen from fish wastes micronuitrients are the only things you should be dosing unless you have high light and co2 injection.

Dude, stop drinking fishwater. fill the hose with water from the sink (holding the ends up, and then place your thumbs over the ends)the hose should be full, then place one end in the aquarium and the other end in a bucket or out the window and presto! or even easier, place the whole hose in the aquarium until there is no air in it. now cap one end with your thumb and place it in the bucket.

lol on the fish breath - I love it and drink it like a shot of vitamins so I don't have to swallow a multi...j/k

I use flourish too with an enriched substrate of eco-complete mud (mix it myself and add what I want then apply).

I use a puffer suction thingy to add the vits and ever so gently squeeze under the substrate/roots.

oh yeah - I'm no expert.

Good luck brah!

my suction bulb broke and I'm just too lazy to get a new one. It's not like my fish water is that dirty, and it's probably less effort to start the siphon my way then to fill the hose with water.

Well first of all to the person in reference to cancer - Everyone has cancer cells in there body ;)

Second you could most likely get away with just dosing Florish. If your tank is high light and your dosing co2 - Look into PPS-Pro It's super easy and easy to understand and pretty much fool proof. It sounds like carsona is dosing PPS-Pro Method or close to it. As he says dry ferts are very VERY cheap to buy and last forever. Except one of the ferts you need for PPS-Pro you no longer can buy Dry unless you have an explosives license (Sounds bad huh)
