you should get a copy of Burgess catfish atlas-as far as i know this is still the cat book.
it dates back to 1989 so many of the names have been updated but it covers over 2000 species.
take into account the amount that only have L-numbers,or common names and others that have not been exported or even found yet and it could easily be double.
Im sure the true number is way higher then most people think. More than 50% of all the fish in the Amazon are catfish, and there are alot of different species in the amazon!
