He's definately not a fusco. I have a fusco and he isn't anywere near a colorful and when there not showing off to their girls they have totaly differen't patterns. There always has been disscusions on wether or not to move the fusco form the nimbochromis group the the tyrannochromis group but there is something about them which I cant think of right now that keeps them in the nimbochromis group.
Hi Honda, Please post a pic of your fusco. I think these fish are fusco's but will get back to you later on this. Don't have my reference books with me.
Great looking fish though and well worth the monies paid for them.

Hrmm....he looks almost exactly like a nimbo fusco.
This is the correct fish. At the size indicated your fish is most definitely a fuscotaeniatus. Macrostoma and nigriventer, when large, have blue bodies. Fusco have the orange colouring on their bodies. Is it possible for you to stand back a little and then to take a pic of the fish?
Great looking fish. :naughty: :woot: :clap :headbang2

I don't know why everybody thinks they are a fusco. I know now that it isn't a macrostoma but a nigriventer. Tyrannochromis come from all over the lake and depnding on location is what their color is. Not all the tyrannochomis ard just all blue. Some of the macrostomas have yellow on the bottom half of th body and some are all blue. Some nigriventors are all blue but some have orange on the side like mine does and those are called tyrannochromis sp. orange spot. Fusco's do look very simimlar in a lot of ways but what are in my pictures is a tyrannochromis. I was going to post pictures but my camera isn't working at the moment. Here are some pictures of the type of tyrannochromis I have and you can even see the orange on the side, it just isn't as bright as the one I have.

Here are some pictures of a fusco

You can see body shape is similar color wise can be close as well depending on fish but fuscos have more of a red than orange. If you look at the two links mine most definatly a tyrannochromis and not a fusco.

I agree, your fish is not a fusco. To the untrained eye, they can be difficult to tell apart. The majority of people have never seen this fish. Its not popular in the hobby although it should be! The stress coloration showing the base blotches is an easy giveaway. When seen next to one another, its much easier to tell colored males. Tyranno. nigriventers trade name is Tyranno. sp 'Orange Spot'. The 'orange spot' name comes from the orange spotting on the scales behind the pectoral fins.

Show a couple pix of your males in stress color and your female and the questioning will stop.

If they were bought together then the tell tale sign is the female that I did not really see the first time I looked at the pic's. Nigriventer has the dark stripe running down from her eye. Great fish.

For reference here is a pic of my more dominant mle fusco -

Nice fish! I used to keep T. Macrostoma (yes, my dominant male looked exactly like the picture posted by fishman) and they're beautiful fish. Sadly, RIP @ 8 inches along with 3 juvi B. Microlepis growing out in my 240 2 years ago when we had a power cut for a full night during winter =\\.

Not a hard fish to tell apart if you know what you are looking for.

I also have macrostoma, although quite small still.

Malawi preds are seriously under-rated fish, quite diverse.
