I have a 8 inch fossochromis Rosturus in an 80 gallon with a school of mascara barbs, wondering if a tyrannochromis same size would be alright or would they battle? They are the only haps in there along with some bottum dwellers.

I am currently keep ALL variants of the tyrannochromis species and they are very docile. You will not have any problems as long as the other fish are larger then 3".. The problems start arising when you have smaller fish as these are predatory haps that will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. Hope this helps!
ABSOLUTELY NOT.... You shouldn't even have a Fossorochromis in a tank that small...
Tyrannochromis males easily reach 16-18" and the same goes for Fossorochromis... To keep two malawi haps that size together you're looking at a 125g tank...
The Tyrannochromis can be expected to try and eat anything 4" and smaller... They are true piscivores. The Fossorochromis are hyperactive sand sifters and would really appreciate a lot of sand if you can provide it. They are even known to bury themselves in sand from time to time when startled, etc.

Never heard of a fossie getting to 18 inches. My cousin has one in a 240 hap tank that is barely 13 inches and this fish is 6 years old. I'am not disagreeing with you just never seen one that large myself or any books stating that large of a size.
The odds of a regular hobbyist landing a 13" or LARGER fish is pretty slim to none. For these fish to reach these sizes it is going to take many of years with the right diet. I don't think you will have problems with sizes anytime soon. I keep fossies in with tyrannochromis' (both are 10"+: in a 180ga tank. They work great for me.
