U.V sterilizer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 things about UV's to look out for...

1) make sure its a UV sterilizer and not a UV clarifier... Clarifiers are only good for green water

2) if you get one of the larger UV sterilizer units, try and get one with a metal casing, my original plastic one sprang a leak coz it was tilted at a slight angle which i didnt know about, and i guess after a while the UV light basically weakened the hard plastic so much it became soft and started a small leak in the area the bulb was closest to the casing...

8W should do it but 15W is better. Use a separate small pump with it (not your canister). I use a 15W with a ~125 gph (or less) pump. Less flow = more opportunity for the bad stuff to get zapped.

The key is to use a fresh bulb. Best to replace each year if you're using it frequently or continuously.

Water pump, power head either would work, just make sure the water is pre-filtered before it goes into the UV. And the GPH is correct, I would go with a minimum of 6watts(1watt per 10 gallon) with a pump around 60 GPH(10 GPH per 1 watt of UV).
