uv sterilizers can be used to kill parasites, and rid tanks of green water. if water is passed through slow enough, it can even kill off beneficial bacteria. you have to be careful how you use one. as for keeping your tank clear, if all params are in line and you are not over feeding, then your tank should be clear without the help of a product. that being said, purigen is a great product that i use in my filters at all times to absorb any kind of organic nitrates from overfeeding. it also keeps the tank crystal clear. the uv sterilizer is good to have on hand in case you ever need it. you never know when you'll have to rid the tank of some parasites, or greenwater. hope this helps.
