Uaru amp. Fry!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Side note on this tank all my other fish are super stressed, not only have this pair of uaru taken over half the tank there is a pair of geo tapajos that just spawned a bit ago as well that have fry on the other end of the tank. Everyone else is just milling around the middle.

Hey everyone, when is the best time to strip the parents of the fry? I want to get them out of that tank before they are too quick and smart for me to easily catch them, but I don't want to pull them out if they are still dependant on the parents for food and what not. The largest of the fry is prob just under an inch.

They are not reliant on the parent for anything but protection at this stage. Separate them so the parents so they are less volatile and more likely to spawn. You can more easily feed the fry if separated, because you can power feed them and easily remove the extra food. You will probably see a growth to 1.5in after 1-1.5 weeks.

omg. I should have removed the fry sooner. my tank was a warzone for a while with the uaru pair following their kids around and chasing anyone who happens to be near. I pulled the fry out, about 15 or so into an unused 50g, and the very next day all my uaru are cruising around together as a group and everyone is relaxed again. what a breath of fresh air.

You can strip the fry pretty much instantly, the parents will breed more frequently and be more peaceful most of the the time. As soon as the eggs are fertilized you could pull them in with an air stone to keep them oxygenated. Fry survival rate should rise drastically.

I've stripped the fry from other cichlids before but I have never worked with fish that feed off the "slime" so I was counting on that being the easiest way to get food to them in a community environment, which it was. I will definitely strip them earlier next time. i'm not super concerned with the survival rate, i'm not trying to produce a lot of offspring to sell, it was more just for the fun of it, seeing how uaru a. act as parents.
