I have 2 Uaru A. in a 120g alone. They are about 6 inches each. They get along great. I have no idea how to sex them though. They both will display for each other and do there little body shakes and circle each other but nothing ever happens. Neither one ever shows there breeding tubes. They are never aggressive toward each other. I started off with 5 of them and these 2 killed one and had the other 2 basically living cornered on the other side of the tank. I traded the other 2 in at my lfs. I have a few crappy pix and a video or 2 of them that I will post as soon as I upload them. Let me know what you think or if you have experience with these fish. Thanks!

Lovely uaru. From the history and behaviour I would bet my life savings (which isn't much TBH) that they are M & F.

6" is still relatively small for uaru, so hopefully with a bit of patience and time they will get around to spawning as they mature. Although the quivering and displaying would indicate that they are thinking about it already !

I agree, it sounds to me like there is a pretty good posibilty you have a pair. They are still young so it may take time before they spawn and might take a spwan or two to get it right. I've always loved Uaru, good luck with them, very nice looking fish.

If they do spawn don't remove the fry too soon they feed off the parents skin secreations like Discus for the first couple of weeks, conversly don't keep them with the parents longer than a few weeks. Once the fry start to grow they can damage the parents if allowed to feed off them too long. In the wild the parents would have left them before this happens but in an aquarium they have no place to go.

Cool thanks guys... I am reading that they will only spawn in perfect conditions... Main thing is warm water (83-86) and lots of greens. I am going to start heavier feedings of plants for them. A few sites have said to stay away from spinach... Not sure why though...

Ok i know a very successful urau breeder. he has dozens of pair in concrete ponds of all things. breeding successfully. i can call him tomorrow to see what his secret is and ill pm u :) I know he obviously doesnt use heaters at all. they ar

OK cool thanks woofy.

Nice to see a tank dedicated to Uaru's :) They are very difficult to sex. Ryan gave me a group and a pair developed. I thought one was the male because it had a steeper head profile, until it started laying eggs!
