Uaru Cichlids????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lovely fish, was going to get rid of mine but thats my gf's favorite fish, she loves their eyes,so i guess i am stuck with it for now

Not heard anyone mention anything about PH or temp.

1) They prefer warmer temps 80+ and a low stable PH. Higher PH can make them suceptable to HITH.
2) They will eat anything including most every live plant.
3) Some of is had had them peck away at and eat pieces of fake plants as well. You'll want to keep an eye to make sure they are not ingesting fakes.

Good info JK. I've seen mine trying to eat silk plants....:screwy:

mine tanks are at 7.8 in ph and 79 in temp never had a problem with him as far as ph or temp got at fake plants so never had a problem wih that either,as long as every thing stays stable you should have no problems

I agree with you, my PH is 7.6 from the tap and I have had not problems with HITH but have read accounts of others experiencing it and refereencing PH as the cause. I think that is more geared towards the fernandezyepezi vs amphiacanthoides who is by far more "hardy" but the OP didn't specify. ;) Uaru are a very personable, curious, brave & awesome cichlid!

I would recommend Uaru to anyone except for my ex, she is evil and I wouldn't want her to enjoy anything...

I love my Uaru. I'm the one who was experiencing HITH with my U. fernandezyepezi, and also with my amphiacanthoides to a lesser extent.

I had them in warm water, did plenty of water changes, fed them tons of different foods, had good filtration, etc. and yet the pits on their face continued to appear. I treated them for hexamita and a few other things over the course of several months and came to the conclusion that they were clean as far as parasites/diseases went. The only thing I could think of was that fernandezyepezi were F1 and the wild-caughts often require very soft, acidic water, so maybe the F1s need the same.

I'm starting to see similar things with my orange amphiacanthoides (also F1 from wild stock) but it's not nearly as bad. The pinholes appeared but they haven't spread. My pH is about 7.6.

Otherwise they're wonderful fish. Mine have always been peaceful. They do better in small groups like discus. They sometimes push one another around but I've never seen them mess with other fish unless they're spawning. Mine stick to themselves in my community tank.
