Hey everyone the pandas are doing well, I've tried a few things to help put tannins into the water since my husband has been gone. I first boiled maple leaves in distilled water and that didn't leech very many tannins, but I thought it was worth a try since I have an abundance of them. The second thing I've tried is the Rooibos tea and I was very happy with the results. At first I tested it by boiling 3 tablespoons in about a gallon and a half of distilled and I got a very nice red color to the water, ending up with a TDS of 44 and ph of about 4.9 to 5. So I decided to add 5 tablespoons in a mesh bag to one of the filters last Thursday. Immediately I could see the tannins in the water and it steadily leached for about 24 hours. I got a decent stain to the tank for about 3 days before I notice the tannins disappearing and as of yesterday the tank dosent have any tannins in it. The pandas where noticeably happier with the tannins in the water. So this week I plan on trying to put 5 tablespoons in each filter and hope the effects last longer.

Man, I can't even get my girl to feed my fish while I'm at work. Props to you! Beautiful fish and a fascinating thread.

Update:
Since Paige Paige started using rooibos, we have been having ph issues. Struggling to keep it below 5.6-5.8. As it turturns out, rooibos is alkaline and has been causing the ph shifts. Stopping rooibos usage. Shame too. The tank looked great with it.

Just read the entire thread. I was particularly interested, in the beginning, in your efforts to consistently keep your PH so low.

Takes a lot of effort to maintain a tank the way you have this one. Well done.

You shouldn't need to keep the pH specifically in the 5s as long as the water is soft and clean. Peathenster bred them with his pH in the 6s. Just keep it on the acidic side, under 7, and they'll probably be alright.

This low tds high tannin environment is perfect. PH would be less of a concern as long as it remains fairly below 7. I think you're overthinking your PH tool.

That is definitely some food for thought. I'm sure he will read this when he gets off work. I'm just glad we figured out what was keeping the ph higher than normal. Because we started using the tea and equilibrium at the same time.

You've started dosing with seachem equilibrium and added rooibos tea recently? I wonder if they've been doing well in pure RO water? Mind sharing how this product has effected your water parameters? Mostly curious if it increases TDS.
