Uaru fernandezyepezi - round 2

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
8 week update - they are doing well. Same feeding routine. Water chang has been reduced to once a week at 80-90%.

I wonder when they are going to morph into adult coloration...

To be honest, their adult coloration isn't too different from that. They end up a creamy gray color with the black markings you see in the video and a red edge along the dorsal. They don't usually show the stark black and white coloration unless they're spawning, I think.

I agree. Just waiting to see when the dots will go away, and maybe the overall color will get lighter so the bars are more prominent....and the eyes to turn redder, lol.

I got some 5" ones last year and they already looked like adults. "The 8" are just over 3" now, so I guess it's going to be in the next 3-4 months.

I got the fish on May 20, 2008 at 2 - 3" in size, and they were at the size you see in the pictures (about 7 - 8") 5 months later, on October 28, 2008. These pictures were taken by Al (brewmaster15) from Simply. I sent the fish to him when they started to develop HITH, probably from my terrible well water. They were really fast growing up to about 5 - 6", similar to the psittacus I grew out.

That's incredible! How big was the tank and did you do discus wc routine on them? Mine are growing a lot faster than my Geos. Makes me wonder how long I can keep them in the 55g.

Edit: found Al's thread on Simply. I think mine are about the size as yours when you received them. Also saw you grew them out in a 150. I'm worried - my bigger tanks all have plants in them, and they have shown me that they will even eat Anubias :(

They won't be in the 55 for long. Mine were in QT in a 40 breeder for about a month and they grew about an inch, then I moved them into a 150 gallon with a group of Mesonauta acora. They did get discus treatment -- I did about 50% daily water changes and fed them three times a day or so. Once they hit about 5" they loved romaine lettuce. I'd just wash whole leaves of it, then close the stem in the tank lid with the leafy green part sticking down into the water. I'd come back an hour later and there would just be a hard, white stalk left with all the green stripped off. lol.

I think you did it exactly right. Large and frequent water changes probably also means less filtration and therefore less water movement. Mack said he tried to minimize the current too.

My wild discus tank sounds perfect for them. I guess I'll have to get rid of the discus :(

How big is the discus tank? You could just keep them with the discus.

I didn't use a lot of current or movement. My 150 was only filtered by four large sponges and the daily water changes. At that point I don't even think I was using AC110s...
