Ive done a few searches on Uaru and can't find that much info on them. How many varietys are there. Any good sources on buying them or getting more info on keeping them. thanks

There are two kinds

uaru amphiacanthoides
The common Uaru- They are a very peaceful South American cichlid that get rather large (12inches or so) they like warm water (soft and acidic to breed but not necessary to keep). Can be a bit gluttonous and will eat anything but they are really a vegetarian and need plants in their diet. Very cool fish.

uaru fernandezyepezi- much more rare variety the Panda Uaru. Hail from columbia, beautiful adult colors. Somewhat more aggressive then UF. They are notoriously hard to acclimate from the wild and very susceptible to disease. They also need soft acidic water or will develop HITH. Also a vegetarian and can be skittish in an aquarium.

Both pics attached are my own fish, the UA is the female of an adult pair. the UF is a near adult (google images and you can see a fired up adult) . Both fish are very cool to keep and have distinct personalities. The UF is much more expensive hard to get and much more difficult to keep (i bought 12 juveniles to get 4 stabilized and thriving) UA is much more common and easier to keep. As far as getting them UA is usually available (Rapps has them now) UF is seasonal and you need to be diligent to get them.

Both fish have spotted juvenile colorations.

All in all i think both fish are awesome to keep and truly under appreciated.

There is also the Uaru Sp. 'Orange' variety, which may or may not be a regional variant of U. amphiacanthoides.

As for keeping them, a big tank with warm soft-ish water, plenty of food with high vege content, some driftwood (a must as they nibble at it), and reasonably robust but not too aggressive tankmates and they'll thrive for you. Best bet is to start with a group of 5-6 youngsters, and you can thin them down to a pair as they grow (or keep the lot if you have a large enough tank). They're really neat fish, one of my favourites!

Thanks for reply. The UA is what I was thinking of and also saw a video of the orange version. Very nice. I have a 6 foot 125 gallon tank and was thinking about Uaru Sev and perhaps a Geo variety. Thanks for all the info. Still doing research before I buy.
