Uaru questions...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tank that I have them in is a 120g. 5ft X 18in X 24in. How many Uaru is too many for this tank? I was only planning to have 4 or 5 at most... I also have a 120g that is 48"X24"X24" if that tank is better suited for them? I will be heading to the fish store today to take some pictures and probably grab another amph. I'm not gonna buy any of the others until you guys give me some insight on the pix that I post tonight when I get home...

Also what I meant by mixing was can I mix the different species of Uaru in the same tank? Say I have 2 Uaru amphs and 2 ferns and 2 of the orange???

Here is a picture of the one I bought... I figured eff it cause there were like 10 yesterday and only 5 today so I didnt want to press my luck and miss getting one. Super crappy picture cause i had to use a flash but ill be able to take more later on tonight to show u the detail of the blue pearling...

It looks to me like they are just coming out of the juvy color phase, so still showing traits of it mixed with the adult color traits.

I agree 100%, the triangle is already starting to develope in the pics. Also, the tank in the first photo shows "chocolate cichlid" on the front which is a common name at some of my local stores for juvie/subadult amphs. (despite the name for an entirely different fish) They will likely retain some of the blueish colors for quite a while, I would get more from the group/age and grow them out. Love the red eyes...

If your still thinking of mixing a/f, this is my opinion only but I think they would be happier/more colorful species only with others from the same species. A group of 4 or 5 in your 48"X24"X24" would be my vote. :D

Here are some pictures of my 2 Uaru I had and the new one to show differences. My 2 I already had never went through a blue phase and both had there triangles a lot smaller then the new fish... So you guys would recommend using the 4ft 120? instead of using the 5ft 120g? Thanks for following the thread through to let me know what I had!

The main reason I say the 4x2x2 is because of the fish adulthood size. At 10"+ the more room that have to turn around and explore the better IMO. Either would work.

I agree that it's just juvenile coloration. Here are some of my juvie amphiacanthoides before they turned brown with the black triangle:

As you can see, they show a lot of variation as they age. Usually if the fish show blue in the face, they'll retain it as an even blue sheen over the gillplate as an adult. You often see this in other cichlids like angelfish and severums.

They will probably also show the blue color in the pelvic and anal fins.
