Uaru update

Here is a pic of the juvies and a full tank shot with some new decor.
Got the hanging plants today for the juvies to have plenty of hiding spots until they get accustomed to their new home.

Looks great. love the layout. The hanging plant to the right, i also have those,there great for hiding equipment. Its an Exoterra plant right? Hagen makes them, there made from the same material that there aquatic silk plants are made from so there safe for aquariums,although they sell them for reptiles. Substrate looks good too. i had black sand in with my uaru befor also, but i found my uaru were very dark in color and there black blotch seemed to bleed into the rest of there body, until i switched to white PFS, now there base color is a nice creamy beige color, and the wedge and black eye spot are more defined and very promenent as well as dark black. I think black sand looks far better in a tank, but my uaru look better against a white sand/ black background.
My tank looked alot like yours at one time, looked like there were no fish, and i use to get comments like "wheres the fish?" but now that mine are larger now, most people think they are beautiful fish. At one point, i almost sold all my uaru because i got frusterated with them being slow growers, always hiding, and made the tank look bare. But im glad i didnt cause now i can "pet" them, they'll eat anything from my hand(even a small pellet) there never hinding, and there always slowly swimming threwout the tank.
anyway, sorry to ramble, lovin your uaru threads, keep them comming!

I have 3 bags of PFS that I am planning on putting in the tank or I may just wait until I can upgrade....haven't decided.
I also am a little bit frustrated because I didn't have a big enough tank to buy all 7 of the juvie Uaru yesterday which would have given me a total of 10!!
I love them!!!The tank is fairly lively with the Giant Danios and the Cories. I think I am going to have to remove the Brasiliensis. They weren't a problem with my Uaru until they started spawning. I hate to get rid of them because they are beautiful fish but I love my Uaru more!!!

I find it interesting that adult uaru get along perfect with juvi uaru. Both have completely different colour paterns and usually there is a huge size difference between the two. Usually you would have to grow a cichlid out a little bit befor adding it to a tank of lager fish. I wonder why thiis is. Perhaps they know its one of them? even though they dont look the same and are not the same size. Or could it be some sort of pre-parental instinct? I dont think it would have to do with the uaru being docile(they're really only docile compared to other SA cichlids)
I was actually at my LFS today and was going to pick up some java fern like you have mentioned showed be safe, but the way mine attack romane lettuce, i thought i should pass. plus they wanted more than $10 for a small jave with maybe 3 small leaves. If i come across some threw my local club for less, i'll try it out though.
The decor looks great the way it is. I wouldnt change the substrate out either until you switch tanks, unless you have some spare time to do it. I''ve done it with the fish still in the tank. I turned everything off except the lights, drained 25% of the water and just scooped the old gravel out with a large "fine" net. I couldn't get it all out with the net, so i syphoned out the rest. Then i just added the PFS into the tank ith a 2liter jug. I filled the jub up with sand and then lowered it into the bottom of the tank, then i poured it out. I found this way there wasnt alot of dust kicked up from just pouring it in.
by the way.. the new juvies look great.

I had to move my Java Fern. The Uaru didn't bother it as long as I had valisneria or some cryptocornes in the tank. Once they finished those off they started to mess with it. The only thing they haven't bothered are my Anubias plants. I thought about getting some duckweed to float for them since it grows pretty quick it may be able to outgrow their appetite.

you would have to add stupid amounts of duckweed to beat their appetites. i added loads and i didnt have any left after an hour then they went back to my elodea. the elodea keeps them off java fern and my anubias nana. but i have to replace the elodea after one or 2 months with new bunches because even that cant grow fast enough to beat them.
