Still looking into the re-stocking of the 150 gallon tank, and I've started seeing more and more about Uaru. I've noticed that Uaru's like to shoal, and I was wondering how many you would suggest for my tank if i would decide to go that route?

No help?

Thanks. I'm working on trying to plan everything out for my tank so that once things fall in place I'm ready to rock and roll. Work has been really busy since the start of the new year, so I haven't had time to strip the old silicone out of the tank and re-seal it.
In the mean time my mind has been going a mile a minute trying to figure out the ideal combination of fish since i want to do a low tech planted set up and remove all, or the majority, of the fake plants. Right now a shoal of Uaru's or a group of three F1 thorichthys (not set on one specific type yet, but male only) are the front runner as the primary cichlid focus for the tank.

I just want to clarify - this 150 is a 4' 150 (tall), I think uaru can still work in that tank but the length (IMHO, not bashing at ALL) limits it from a shoal to maybe a pair, either way I can't wait to see them!

That had been my primary concern as well (the length of the tank) for Uaru, but from the research I've done, once they pair off they tend to get very aggressive. So if i do choose to go with Uaru, I would start out with a shoal to grow out, and then once they pair off I'd keep the pair and sell the rest to the fish store or someone willing to pick up.
Still up in the air on if I'll do these guys or thorichthys, but it great to get the feedback from everyone about what challenges may await the different choices. Thanks

I don't know that I'd keep more than 4 in a 4' tank and that's still pushing it. They do shoal as youngsters but sometimes can get pushy with each other as they grow. As adults, they're going to be big fish (8 - 10"+) with huge appetites.

True. I will keep all of this in mind.

I can't believe no one made any comments on the idea of having a planted Uaru tank... It will be just about impossible because Uaru are herbivores... They will eat the plants down to the roots. And my second comment would be that a 150g tall is not gonna be a low tech tank. That tank is 30 inches deep. You would need an insane amount of light to reach the bottom.

Aside from all that... I started with 5 Uaru A. and narrowed down to just a pair in a 5 foot 120g and absolutely love them. They are a very active and playful fish.
