Uaru's in a 150T

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I totally missed the follow-up post about the planted tank.

beantickler is correct. Uaru will mow down any plant in your tank. They will also gnaw on driftwood and eat filter & prefilter sponges. They are like goats. If you want plants, even silk ones, you'll have to go with something other than Uaru. My Uaru tore my silk plants to shreds, then the pieces got sucked up in the filter and stopped my impellers. It was a real PITA.

Yep...My Uaru puts anything green in his mouth. As of now I put romaine in daily and he leaves my fake plants alone. He and my sevs love greens. And I agree a tall tank is going to be difficult for low tech planted. Would be sweet for a biotope inspired Uaru tank though!!!

Thorichthys it is then. I had actually been doing some more reading on Uaru last night and hadn't realized that they would destroy plants. I had read a couple of placed that they might nibble on things, but nothing mentioned they would be lawnmowers. I was going to post this morning that I was steering away from Uaru because of the tank dimensions and diet, but you guys sort of beat me to the punch.
In regards to the planted setup and being low tech, maybe I'm not using the term low tech correctly. Maybe I should be referring to it as a Low Maintenance set up. That being said, the light that I have is CF fixture that uses two 6700ºK/10000ºK 65W
bulbs. When I said low tech, I guess I meant that I wouldn't be running Co2 and that it would be plants with low requirements such as mosses, anubias, java fern. Thanks for all your help.
Maybe down the road I'll give Uaru a try in a tank with rocks and driftwood.
