Ugh....Monster dead Leichardti :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what a ****!! How cold did it get, Steve? And are you very far away from Lei's natural habitat?

Thanks for the condolences guys.

Its nice to know that this fish inspired others to keep these great fish and that it was also looked upon as one of the nicest. It has definitely been one of my favorites and I am yet to see another one with such intense red. That says a lot since I see WAY more leichardti than you guys ever would.

The water temperature was under 10C at one point. I tried heating but it just couldn't handle it. Constant cold rain didn't help the heating process either. The only other alternative was to move it back inside. Last time I tried this he just kept jumping again.

Before every winter I used to power feed him so he would gain extra fat for the winter. In the autumn he was sick and went off his food for sometime. It was only in winter that he started eating again. I don't know but maybe that could have also played a part.

I am quite close to the natural habitat of Leichardtis but I think in a way smaller amount of water the temp would have been colder.

Thanks again guys...it was a rough loss for me :(

Damn Steve that really blows :( yea temprature is definitely a factor. Above ground ponds get colder than ones in ground or the water in lakes and rivers. At least you could always go catch another one.

Sorry for the loss, I can only hope to have a lei like that some day...

so sorry to hear steve. Is the other one still around?

Nah mate I don't have it either.

The pair were getting along great but the smaller one really suffered when it experienced its first winter.

I managed to save it and it is now in a friends tank. It is a GREAT looking fish.
