I don't see fish as ugly. I just find some more aesthetically pleasing than others. However, I concur that I would love to see the above at 12".

ugliest cichlid I've ever seen was posted by that guy who caught it from a hot springs somewhere in Idaho or Utah? can't recall exactly which state, but that thing had been hit with the whole dang ugly tree! and he said the place was full of them.

Ugly face, ugly body color, terrible body structure, and weak tails. Only way I would keep JDs is if they were F0 and free but even then bleh.
