The only bad news about a smasher...is that they can crack the bottom of your tank.

Most people that keep them put a sheet of plexi or acrylic on the bottom of their tank to add some "padding".

Someone mentioned a pistol shrimp. This could be causing the popping you hear. Less of a danger than a mantis.
