I just bought some Paracheirodon axelrodi from my LFS and they died with in 40 hr, of being in my tank, so I went and exchanged for some new ones and the same thing is starting to happed again. There fins are turning white and they seem to have a tendency of going vertical when they are not actively stabilizing or swimming. All of my water parameters are with in reasonable limits. All of my other fish in the tank are fine 3 other P. axelrodi, 4 rasbora espei, 2 Oto cats, and some ghost shrimp. In fact some of my ghost shrimp have started to breed. So does anyone know what the hell is going on because I sure don’t? Thanks for any help,

:nilly:

not sure but i was told by a lfs owner that neon tetra are really low quality because of excessive breeding

what exactly are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH?
can you find out the pH of the store's water?
how did you acclimate the new fish?

p.s. - you might want to start using a quarantine tank, otherwise sooner or later your older fish are going to catch something bad from the sickly new arrivals, not to mention an ammonia spike if one dies and goes missing and rots in the tank.

ammonia 0 nitrite o nitrate 0 to .05 ppm Ph about 6.8 to 7, and i did a 30% water change on wensday and a 10% one earler today. i know thats what i was thinking i never have had this problem in the past. what would be a good quarantine tank?? 10G with a sponge filter?

the last one died, so i think that i just might buy some new plants or somthing. also the whitness that was in the dorsal fin seemed to creep down into the top of the boby and bleach the color out.

I suspect your talking about Paracheirodon innesi (neon tetra) and not P. axelrodi (cardinals) as the symptoms you describe are classic for a microsporidian parasite known as Pleistophora hyphessobryconis which doesnt affect cardinal tetras. Pleistophora pronounced pleessTOFFHera is also known as Neon Tetra disease and is immeadiately identified by the classic white area below/around the dorsal fin. This link below will give you some more details. Contary to online advice, I have had reasonable success with Aquarium Pharmacuticals "General Cure" capsules which contain metronidazole. Its very important to pick this disease up extremely early on though. I would see your shop for some replacements as they will be losing all their stock by now too.

thanks for the help. They are axelrodi, at least they look, and were labaled as such. Cant they get that to it is just less likly?? thank you so much. i think i will take your advice and alert my LFS.

Cardinals have the red stripe right accross the bottom and on Neons the red stripe only goes half way down the body length. Just google for some images if you need to see the differences. From your description it sounds like you have neon tetra disease so it sounds like you have neons. (I used to have several aquarium shops myself).
