pillow case works well too...

you should have seen the s*** i got for mentioning that a pillow case was a good idea...i wasn't even the first one to say it in the thread...if i remember right i was gonna get shot in the knee cap over it:ROFL:

as for the op's q....just use a large tupaware or kool-aid pitcher for the move if you don't want to just pick it up with your hands...thats how i catch all my bullheads for my tanks and cat fishing....

Lower the water level, get an old towel and put it in the tank underneath him, lift up the towel with the fish in it, carry to new tank. Hold towel with fish in new tank for a couple of seconds to relax the fish, then let go of one side of the towel and the fish swims slowly away.

honestly, i would try the pillowcase method. or even better, the big tupperware container. if you try to "old towel" method, your gonna end up with your fish on the floor flopping crazily. even after a couple seconds, the fish will not be "relaxed" from being out of water. the pillow case or plastic container method prevents this

get tupperware its the best restraint thats how I moved around my 11'' raphaels around and they're kind of the worst cats to do nets with. I just lowered the water level, trapped the cat with two tupperware bins clasped together. anything flimsy- you risk the chance of the cat's spines poking thru like garbage bags then get tangled up but pillowcases might be smooth/sturdy enough for a bullhead's spine but not a great idea for some of the fish who has very prickly body/spine build. However for this cat- it would be more likely just to be fine

lay a bucket in the tank - herd the fish in with a net or your hand-cover the bucket with the net to stop fish backing out and lift bucket out by handle with other hand.
nothing to snag fin spines on.
for bigger fish get a koi net with a removable handle.

Thanks for the input everyone. I used a towel to move him to the new tank. The fish didn't seem to mind being in the towel and when I let him go into the new tank he calmly swimmed out of the towel. I was really happy to see him in there! The real work was cleaning out the old tank lol but it was worth it!!!

I've used the towel method before. Worked well. I've also heard rave review on using laundry baskets. I think shower baskets, plastic strainers, etc would work great for smaller fish.

Glad your move went smoothly. After I was done moving the guy with a towel, I added a little extra prime for a slime coat boost. :)

Happy the towel method worked. I did that with my 20" black aro and had no problems whatsoever. As long as you're slow and steady the fish seems to stay relaxed in my experience.
