Ok, I have a female (at least according to what I know) Senegal bichir i bought at a walmart about a year ago. She's about 8.5" long, and she eats raw salmon, earthworms, and feeder fish. She lives in a thirty gallon by herself right now, but I just saw some adorable knifefish and I'm considering getting one...I'm not sure on what type they are, they're black and about 4-5" long.

Now, could I get one and put it with my bichir? Or should I leave her to herself? I was just wondering because she's been by herself for almost a year, if she'd be too vicious for another fish. I tried adding a plecostamus a few months after getting her, but she tore it apart and so i couldn't keep it.

So yeah any advice would be welcome. Thanks
 
In a 30 leave her on her own or think surface dwellers,was the knife you saw a blackghost knifefish?
 
might've been, come to think of it I think it was. At the store, they had the knifefish in the same tank as the baby bichirs and some sort of african butterfly fish too.

So, what sort of top-dwellers would be suitable for keeping?
 
One african butterfly fish would work. Thats all that I would do in a 30 gallon. Although depending on it's size it could become a snack for the bichir.
 
the ones at the store are about 2" long, that's a tad small, right?
Could I get one and put it in a 10 gallon until it gets bigger, then put it in with the bichir? And what do they eat?
 
10 Gallon would be too small for one as they need a decent footprint in a tank. They also grow fairly slow if I remember correctly, been a while since I owned one.
 
So, I'd have to find a larger one then? My main fear is that if I bought one of the smaller ones, then my bichir would tear it up...she's a tad aggressive.
 
If the knife was all dark brown/black and does not have a single dorsal fin it would work with your Sen in a slightly larger tank like a 40 breeder or 55 gallon. They are called African black or brown knifefish. Not the best pic but you should be able to see if they are the same fish...

It was a black ghost, the kind with the white stripes...will those work?
 
From the sounds of it probably not bichirs can be very territorial which it seems yours
has a tendancy to be.Another consideration is the adutl size of a bkg which can 18''
so youd need a much bigger tankin the area of 75 gallons-Anne
