Am I the only person that has an O ring that never seals after I do a waterchange/clean the inside of it.

WATER ON THE FLOOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use 'VASELINE' on all rubber O-ring seals after every routine maintenance cleaning to form a nice leak free seal. It also helps extend the life of the rubber by preventing it from cracking and drying out.

Yeah man. One time I hooked up a brand new XP4 for my client's tank....next day I received a phone call from him....................

yeah you must make sure to lubricate your o rings so they don't dry out stretch all that good stuff.

You can also check to make sure that they do not have any flat spots. You have to look close but you will be able to see if the sealing edges are round and did not flatten out.

Yeah the o-ring in the top of my Eheim 2180 is flat already, w/ a groove that the top housing fits into...Point being that not all "o-rings", are cross sectionally round...

As long as they are not deformed, by being seated incorrectly, O-rings by the very nature of them being a "captured" seal, really don't wear out...
They will sometimes loose their pliability from being exposed to air and light etc.

That's why fish safe silicone is a good idea, to keep them supple so they can do their job...

Ugh...canisters.

Was fiddling with a used one I got the other day. Old Fluval 403. Had read it was hard to prime...hmm. Managed to get the o-ring on there, forced the lid down nice and tight and watched a few bubbles come out of the spray bar...hmmm. Realized that I had positioned the tab of the lid over the clip, crap...pulled the lid off again. I suppose my closing the lid had started the water suctioning through, within 10 seconds water was pooling on my floor.

Lesson learned...put all the tubes and hosing in the water AFTER you get everything closed up and tested for leaks. By the way, I plugged it in after I got everything cleaned up and nothing happened..motor is burnt out or something. Yaaay.

Ooohhhh SNAP!!
you didn't throw it away did you?...Fluval 403's are notorious for needing the impeller assembly replaced every so often. And it is such an easy fix. The impeller cover unscrews off to the left or counterclockwise, about a quarter turn. then just lift off the cover, pull out the impeller, put the new one right back in where the old one came out of, and screw the impeller cover on to the right or clockwise...done deal and they run like new again...

If it helps, and you probably did learn your lesson, always check the pump motor before installing anything else, ALL electrical pumps and stuff. Just for a quick second plug/unplug, if it runs, it RUNS! then go on and finish the install.

I think we all have done that before...gone through a lengthy instalation of something that doesn't work... It always sux when something doesn't work right, and we trusted it, because we found it for such a great deal...:screwy:
