I'm very intrigued by the ultima filters. I'm hearing some say they do and some say they don't need more mechanical filtration. Looking for opinions from those who have experience with and without extra filtration. If you have pictures even, looking to see clarity of an ultima as a filter by itself. I keep stingrays also so I don't know if the ray poop will make any difference on how it will filter.

Wow! Not a single response????

That's what I was thinking...maybe there are no ultima II people running only the filter. Just wanting to see what tank clarity would be with no other mechanical filtration.

I am not familiar with them. Are they a sand filter. swimming pool type? How small of micron will they remove?

I have an Ultima 2. From my experience you need to run filter socks or something to keep the water clear. I can always tell when water is bypassing a dirty sock because the water gets cloudy. You need somewhere for heaters anyway so I run a small sump with socks and heaters. After having one I don't think I'd set up a big tank without one, the backwash feature let's me drain 250 or so gallons in 10 minutes for water changes and you never have to open it and manually clean it.

Just an idea, don flame me bros,
Have you considered a k1 kaldnes filter in a 55 gallon plastic drum, or multiple 55g drums?
Essintially they do the same thing, just cheaper

That is the filter setup I currently have. 2-55 gallon barrels to a 100 gallon stock tank with k1 media. Just reading on the ultima and bead filters and they take up less space with equal or more bio filtration. Does anyone know if the glass beads do bio as well? They filter down to 3 micron!
