Ultima II Over filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is the link to the Wlim bead filter - http://wlimproducts.com/bio-wave-filter.htm

I have no personally experience with them but people here have mentioned that they take much less water to back-flush and they do a better job of polishing the water.

Again, its a trade-off... those use a 1HP air pump which is huge! So.. waste some water... or use a giant air pump....

IMO wasted water just does my water changes for me when I clean the canister.

a 1 HP blower sounds like the equivalent of a leaf blower..

...BTW- I use the water in the sink as my indicator that the filter is clean, not the little sight window. The sight window will look clean long before it really is... at least for aquarium use.

Good tips. Do you have a thread on your system. A 1700 gallon tank is impressive, I would like to read more about it :)

Edit: I see it in your sig, thanks!

Thanks for the link, can't find a listed max flow rating for the filters on their site, so that i can price a pump to match the filter.

Edit: i found their recommendation, you have to go look at their complete kit page to get a pump recommendation. (but of course no prices listed there lol)

I know the tendency for most entry level HOB or Canister filters is to over filter based on the box "recommendations" which i completely understand.

But when it comes to large tanks, and filters such as the ULTIMA II series, is over filtering still necessary?

I know one user was using an ULTIMA II 10K on a 500 gal tank, which seems rediculous, also VLDESIGN is using a 6k on his 2700 gallon tank which seems a bit more practical.

I'm just wondering if i build a ~1000 gallon tank can i use a ULTIMA II 2000 or even get away with a 1000, i'm swaying more towards the 2k but i don't want to find out later i'm under-filtering.

Thanks in advance

The reason I was using the 10k on my 500 was, I got it for cheap and it worked great.

Has anybody used both of these types of filters? These ones from wlim tout an advantage to the floating media...I would be interested to know how it compares to a non-floating media canister like the Ultima.

sorry masterB i wasn't trying to insult you, i hope you didn't take it that way.
