sent final sump design off to the sump builder for a quote this morning.

Looks good, what is the chamber to the right of the socks for? My only thought would be that with the socks nearly entirely submerged you might find they clog fairly frequently.

My inlet pipes are low after being run through walls, as in below the filter socks. The first chamber gives me an up-flow area to spill into the filter socks. The first chamber will also make it so the back pressure on the Herbie-over flow system never changes and can never clog, and if a critter ever makes it down the siphon it gives them one last place to get caught before being dumped into the filter socks. It is 5" wide because that is the width of my hand, so I can easily reach in there and clean or retrieve a fish.

I dont think the socks should clog any faster or slower being submerged. I also plan on having an egg crate sitting on top of them that will hold two layers of blue filter floss above the socks. The filter floss can be easily swapped out once or twice a week and should catch all the big crud from clogging the socks too quickly.

That must be where the intakes are coming in. I would lower the left divider a little since that will be the height of the standing water in the sump and looks to be over the socks. The top of the socks should be a few inchs off the water I think. I like the 6 sock chamber though.. I dont think it would clog that quick.

- nevermind! posted while you were typing out your reply above :nilly:

I too would be worried about the socks. I only ever had one, it was in a forced pressured housing and the stupid thing would clog in days, bringing the flow to a stop. (huge 3ft long LFI filter) It would seem to me that you would want several feet of pressure feeding those socks, though you do have 6 to share the load so that helps.

Then again, I think mine was a "fine" material... would never use that again unless you like constantly cleaning them.

Having some sort of bypass overflow if things backup would be a good idea.

From my experience, the further out of the water the socks are the more effective gravity is at pulling the water through them and the longer they last between cleans. You do have six of them so it is a fairly large surface area, but with minimal vertical difference there won't be much weight helping push the water through the media. I guess it will simply be a case of wait and see, it really depends on the flow, the mess from the fish, and how often you consider it to be a PITA having to change them. Some people don't mind changing them frequently, but with my old set up I very quickly got sick of cleaning them every three days.

The inlet chamber makes sense though, it's hard trying to design a sump with limited vertical space!

Awesome setup! But with all this electricity and hightech toys you will need to have in plan also a powerful ups system :)

need to have in plan also a powerful ups system :)

TrippLite 1200W inverter/charger with (2x) 75Ah sealed deep cycle RV batteries for the pumps. This is just to cover the 30-60 sec delay before the whole house 20kw generator kicks on.

Holy crap that is some serious power! :D just subscribed to your thread, the progress is amazing!
