Had a buddy was misinformed how big they get, I offered to take it for the time being, just how big can I espect this thing to get in captivity? Its in a 125g tank right now.

3ft, way bigger than what your 125 will hold.

3ft in captivity really? How the hell can petsmart sell these things?

but the tag says they only need 30 gallons...

Rule #1 when shopping at petsmart.

Never believe anything you read or hear while in the store. Assume that no one there has more knowledge about the products they sell than you.

Ha, seriously. They suggest a 30 gallon for oscars...what the heck?

So yeah...might have to give away your pacu, sorry.

Well Im not the one who bought it, I just took it for a friend. Its funny though, petsmart does mislabel alot of fish. They list leperinus at a max length of 6 inches, and the tag says its ok to have bala's in a 30g tank. Thing about the pacu was, I knew they get big, I was gonna keep him if you said they only reach 2 ft or so in captivity but 3+ is just WAY too big. Ive got a work aquaintance with a 300g tank I just got off the phone with, he is gonna take the pacu. Should be a better fit.

300 wont last either-
I got my guy at the 2.5 to 3 inch mark 2.5 years ago now-He is easily 24 inches and requires a fair amount of space to roam

While that is pretty amazing, 300 is the best I can do:( Its certainly better than my 125g. So what in the world does petsmart do with pacu's who dont get bought? I imagine they will outgrow those holding tanks rather quickly?

Understandable-
I'm in no way jumping on you-

Some one buys them eventually and we see more threads like this-
Or ones that say something to the affect of "need to get rid of Pacu-Free for ne that will take him"-
