Umbee is messed up need help please!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pictures? It could come back but shouldn't build a resistance to the meds especially the sulfa.

I will get pics, one of the meds I used prior not sure sulfa or Kanamycin but it said can use up to 4 fold. If it has come back shoyld I maybe increase dose? Is there a recomended dose for this type of desease?

That is oodinium. It is frequent with umbees. What you are treating is the secondary bacterial infection with sulfa, kanamycin. Maracide 2 is what you need. It is a combination of malachite green and chelated salts. They sell it at Petco or petsmart. If you can't get Maracide 2 get maracyn which is copper. You need to use this medicine in combination with a gram negative anti bacterial. Umbees do well with furan 2. Oodinium is a parasite and you should notice listlessness and hard breathing. It takes 2-3 days to fix the problem. After and only after the problem is fixed keep the temperature at 88 going forward.

Dan you hit it bang on man!!! That tank was always at a cooler temp and listleness and heavy breathing was exactly what he was doing the first time. Thank you very much. Will treat as you recomend.

The creamsicle Midas I got off you is one of the nicest I have seen and those chanchos are golden beauties :)

Just to clear up some points on the meds Maracyn 2 is Minocycline a synthetic form of Tetracycline which is a broad spectrum antibiotic for gram negative bacteria, it is at it's most effective in low Ph soft water such as blackwater type set-up but looses it's effectiveness as the Gh and Ph rise. Maracyn is erythromycin which is a gram positive antibiotic and is generally used for some specific instances such as eye infections where Streptococcus sp. is the primary culprit. It is also very hard on BB and is best used in a hospital tank.
Never use Malachite Green in combination with either Tetracycline or Erythromycin however a very effective treatment for Oodinium is API General cure which can be combined safly with 3X sulfa to kill the protozoan and provide excelent coverage against secondary bacterial infections. While I have no doubt after reading what was discribed above that I did get the initional diagnosis wrong both can persent similar symptoms. With out clinical pathology available we do what we can from pics and discriptions. I did want to explain to you how to correctly use the meds. Medacations are often used incorrectly and the results can be much less than desirable especially when attempting to combine medacations and water chemestries. You should also wait 30 mins after using any water conditioner before adding meds to the tank. Use the full doasage of both API 3X sulfa and General Cure in combination and follow the schedual on the package. GL.

Thanks Tom, Not always easy looking at pics. Apreciate your help. Just glad its not columnaris

Velvet is kind of a pain to clear. Most fish that have velvet externally also have the parasite colonized in their intestines. Unfortunatley successful treating of external infection typically does not get rid of the ones in the gut. You need to watch these fish careful because recurrence of infection is very common.
