  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Stunning! I have a young pair growing out and I hope they look like yours. Thanks for sharing.:) Mike

I've noticed that medium to dark substrate really makes their colors pop. May I ask what type of lighting you are using?

He's about 13" and his mate about 6". They are in a 120 gallon and spawn on a regular basis (every 6-8 weeks). I'll get a full tank shot up soon.

Is he not belligerent to the female? That tanks sounds really small though most Umbee I have seen have been kept in 300g plus.

They have been in that tank since he was about 5" and the female around 3-1/2". He can get a little nasty now and then but she has a couple of caves and pots to hide in that he can't get into. They spawn every so often and they pretty much get along great.
Would a bigger tank be better, definately but believe me they get fresh water twice a week and are in perfect health as you can see from the pics. Ideally these shouldn't even be kept in aquariums under 300-400 gallons but that's in a perfect world.

Mike,
Definately, a darker substrate is the way to go if you want to appretiate the colors! As far as lighting is concerned, don't look at the pics. I was using 3 canon speedlites over the tank and a reflector to get the effect you see in the pics.
If you have a young pair that you are growing out just be careful with the female. He will quickly outgrow her and if she doesn't have enough cover when he starts getting aggressive you'll come home and she'll be gone! Don't ever take it for granted when they are getting along because things go from peacful to violent in a hurry with them!

Awesome fish George. Yes people heed the advice. I seen these fish personally and they are awesome in person. They are doing great in the enclosure that they are in. Not everyone has the space to keep a 300g.

Thanks George! I hear ya about seperating them. I had to do that when the male reached probably 4.5". He's by himself for the time being and doesn't seem to like any tankmates.lol!:) Mike
