Umbee pair

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are not easy to sex at all. Even sometimes when larger it's difficult to sex just going by appearance. Subdominant males if in a group can look like females. Usually at around 5-6" you can get a good idea if you have a male or female. This is another young pair I own. They are right around the 5-6" mark. Females will typically have duller colors, trailers on fins will not be as long, and many times females will sport black pelvic fins and some black on the dorsal.

Thats what I've heard, when choosing I just picked the largest of the fry. Mine is in a tank alone so hoping I can see signs of traits sooner. But it seems safe to say at the 5-6" mark i'll notice a change you think?

Hi mate just a quick question on your umbee’s which looks amazing by the way, really nice photos and colouration.how are they when you put your hands in to clean the tank etc, and do they have teeth like the dovii ? I really like the personality and size, colouration of both umbee and dovii but most dovii seem like a pain to do maintenance and feeding just wondering if umbee were the same.

Honestly mine avoid my hands for the most part. The only time they get a little ballsy is when they have a fresh batch of fry they will try to run me away from them. They will attack the siphon hose but it’s almost like they know better than to bite the hand that feeds them lol. They will attack my wife’s hand though, not sure why. And they do not have the large canines a dovii has. Regardless, they do have teeth and they are sharp. Once they hit the 12”+ mark they really stand out and can do some damage if they were to latch on to you.

Kind of a poor quality photo but this gives you an idea. This picture was taken a few months ago and the male was around 12”. In the grand scheme of things he’s still a baby. Once they hit the 18-20”+ mark those choppers are impressive lol
