I am thinking about getting back into umbee again and had a couple questions. Ok first, I know personality and aggression will be different fish to fish. but If i do get back into these guys i would like to work towards a pair. and my question is what are my odds in achieving a compatible pair so that i dont have to use a divider all the time? My dovii pair are great together and i the reading i have done on umbee about this states "pretty much good luck" lol.
And ill make sure to have a large enough tank and will prolly upgrade larger as they grow. But I miss the one i had in the past and want to do it again, but i dont want him to be all by himself. Thanks for all or any advice. Jason

I didnt have much luck in my growout tank with my male umbee. He destroyed three of his siblings, two of them in one night. Id say with enough space though anything is possible. What size tank are you planning on trying this in?

Well it all depends on their size when i get them to know what tank im gonna put them in. My option now is 125,180 to grow some out. if a loner i have some smaller tanks. Im having a 300 built and been thinking about a 500 instead since its only gonna cost me a few hundred more.

what is the scientific name of an umbee? , looks like is a big cichlid after seeing those tank sizes.

I kept all my umbies apart until about 4-5". then When the male started growing faster than the females I used an eggcrate with holes busted through to let only the females through. The male chose a partner and still tried to kill her. She only lasted as long as she did cuz the male was too big to fit through the holes.

I used a 75 gallon for almost 2 years with my umbies. At 7-8" I threw my male in a 600 gallon tanks where he mysteriously died a few month later.
