When,Where?

Tuira-Chucunaque River, Panama, After finishing my big tank, there is also a lot of cichla mono at Gatun an artificial lake by the canal.

(Scientific name: Caquetaia Umbrifera) you have to understand that Umbee males are "Hyper-Aggressive" its crazy, i think the odds are somewhat against you. male umbee's will kill a female if he is ready to mate and she isn't. your best bet is an egg crate divider

I do know that the green varient comes from panama. I think the blue's come from colombia. I found an artice from Rapps on these guys. im gonna try and post it. lets see if it works.www.cichlidae.com/article.php?id=138

What i might do is keep some other slightly larger cichlids in with them to keep their aggression from each other. so i will have to use a larger tank. otherwise ill use a 75 for grow outs and dividers.

Its good to know you're getting back into Umbees Jason.

I have 3 umbees in my 225 (2 confirmed females and 1 potential male??) and they have been fine for the last 3 months. The females would really be the ones who'd go at it and the male would go back and forth between them. I never once had to separate them. However, I've noticed within the last 2 weeks or so, the male has paired up with the larger female.

I think you'll be fine if you start small with several growouts. However, if you start a little larger where they can be sexed, I'd trying maybe getting more females than males so you're chances of pairing are higher. Again, this is how its only working for me now....time will tell.

I have an acrylic 240 that im looking at. It would be nice to have them already sexed since the ones i bought at 1.5" grew slow. but I couldnt afford a group at 150$ a piece.lol. I would like to have a group so i can choose and they tend to be more owner responsive when grown out from lil guys. but sometimes you have to roll with the punches. and im not against getting them around 4"+ to help get the ball rolling. But for now unless some kind of crazy offers come around im just interested in getting your male if you still have him when i get back. and then ill wait to see how everything plays out with the tanks i have in mind.
