All, for a pair of Umbee, would you go for the longer (96"x24") tank or wider (72"x30") tank? I've got the longer tank stocked and am working on the wider tank build (as big as space will allow) - just wondering as I have never had Umbee before - or even seen a large one in person - not sure which one to put them in when I do.

Filtration will be overkill (huge sump or canisters w/ pond matrix and backup sponge filters) on either one, along w/ many pythos for nitrates and w/ weekly 75% water changes - more if needed - thanks,

I don't think you'll need to do 75 percent water changes for 2 fish in that size of tank with all that filtration as well. A nice healthy healthy bio load and water chemistry is key to healthy fish, not huge unnecessary water changes. Doing that large of water changes in a tank that size with just two fish would do more harm then good since you will just keep throwing off the water chemistry everytime. I've learned that doing more frequent smaller water changes is key to good water chemistry instead of big water changes and I do that will pretty heavily stocked tanks. Just my two cents ;)

Ive had adult Umbee in both tank sizes , if it where me 96x30 .. my female umbee outgrew the 72x24 just by herself .. she was close to 18 " had to remove everything from tank . She was fine, it just looked cramped , would never think about breeding her in that set up .GL

Thanks Mr Pleco - unfortunately I already have the 96" and it is on 24" wide - I really wish I had done it 30" but I'm stuck with what I have. As for the new tank, I only have room for 72" long and 30" is my max width to get through a door - given the limitations and your experience, would you suggest compromising on the extra 24" length, or the extra 6" width - appreciate the feedback - thanks,

I'll never buy another tank that is not at least 30" wide .. Id go 72x30

That cracks me up, thanks - I remember having the thought a long time ago, that I would never buy a tank that is not at least 18". Several years ago, I decided no matter how good a deal I can find a 75 or 135 used, I will never buy a tank that is not at least 24". Now I'm thinking 30" like you - then I see Guapote Mel's tanks and he would probably say he would never buy one that is not 36" or likely 48". It is definitely more bang for the buck.

If you're limited to 30" because you have to get it through a door just turn it on edge and make sure you're not more than 30" tall.

72" L x 36" W x 24" T.

Done & done.
