How would be the best way for me to get a male Umbee.

I would buy a group of juviniles (atleast six) and grow them out, pick the biggest and best male, and sell the rest. Some higher-end LFS' stock them periodically, and fishfarmusa has some for sale in the vendor forum.

go to aquabid and look for tiny28 or motorcity cichlids for F1s. They have good wild stock and reasonable prices. I bought mine from him. very aggressive little guys!

Males trailers get longer at about 6-8 inches the males heads turn that copper kind of color

Females can get those long trailers as well as bronzing on the gill plate and other things that everything written would make you think male. So grow yours out to a very large size before getting rid of them because those markers in themselves don't really decifer male or female.

Here's some old videos of my male and female juvies at around 5-6" TL.

Definate difference in dorsal extensions, color, and head shape.

Here is the same male presently going on 16" TL:

its very very hard to distinguish between male and female.
mine has all the male characteristics yet when it is fighting or stressed goes bronze with a black dorsal.
so its hard to tell IMO.
and as far as i know its very very hard to get a male umbee from the bloodlines available
in the hobby today.
