At the moment they are in a ten gallon I went and bought just for them. I didnt mess with cleaning one out because they are so cheap. I took a piece of driftwood from another tank and put it in there with no gravel and its being filtered with a whisper40.
I covered the strainer at the end of the filter's intake with some filter media wool and rubber bad. I took another strainer from a older canister filter and placed it over filter wool of the first strainer, it is big enough to slip right over, then covered that with more filter wool and rubber band. The surface area for the intake is so large now that it does't produce enough sucking power to over power the fri at all. In fact I watched one swim up to the intake nibble on something that got caught in the wool and swim a way seamlessly. So they are happy.

Not a problem Rob, I'll post some pics of the pair with the few fry left. Good news is the female is almost ready to breed again.
