Umbees spawned

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow nice catch jslayz, you usually don't find them at the LFS. Umbee is my favorite fish :)

Umbee and Festae are my favourites !!
Guess what, I have wrigglers!!
So my little male umbee did his thing, huh, I thought they would be duds!
As I have always let my festae look after the wrigglers and they are in a easy to view area now, I'm gonna enjoy watching them develop.

Pic coming soon.

Mom wasn't eating them, she is moving them. Once they are alid and show signs of movement, she will move them about 2 times a day or more to different nests that mom and dad have created in the tank. Mom amd dad will both continue "to eat them" but are actually moving them and keeping them "in line", so to speak. (Especially in a community tank)

I had a pair of jacks that have spawned twicein 3 months an those are the habits that I have seen. Hope

Hope the info helps!! Congrats and Good Luck!!

Thanks reallybigfish and thanks steelshade.

so should I just leave the pair in the community tank with 2 severums, a carpinte and 4 GT's?
Or should I remove the ornament that the eggs are on.....??
Could the pair bond of these fish be broken by disturbing them?

Seems noone on a couple of websites can give me a definite plan of action.

Your thoughts MFKeepers?

Leave them with the parents. It will strengthen the pair bond and don't worry Umbies will spawn like clockwork at that size when you have a compatible pair. You can remove a portion of the fry when they become free swimming. Good luck they look great!

Gratz Jslayz!!! beautiful young pair. There are many ways to prep the rearing of your new lil wigglers. My method of choice would be to remove all the tankmates and let the parents raising the youngsters. I think the best display tanks are the ones with parents and babies.

Hi cjbarth, yeah I was hoping the mum was moving them but I watched a heap of unhatched eggs going in and nothing coming out....was her first attempt so may have decided that she would eat them coz of the other inhabitants being there.
I have some wrigglers so at least I know the male and the female are fertile.
I'll leave them to do whatever the pair want next time.

Thanks GMfishnut, that youtube video of your pair has been very inspirational!!
Do you still have them, I hope so?

Hi EdCal, thanks! I really like having my parents and young on display. My 225 gal festae tank is in main living area, directly across from my 400gal community tank.

Be great to have babies in both at once!

J

Congrats on your pair spawning. Nice looking pair. You can remove some from fry's away from the parents (after they start free swimming) and raise them in a grow out tank. From my experience, once I removed the other fishes out of the tank, the males attention went to the female and nearly killed her. I had to use a divider just to save my female red devil from the male when I removed the other fishes. But anyways, congratulation and I will continue to check for updates. Thanks!
