Unacceptable losses

Even when I added a ph buffer to my r/o water in two days it would bounce back up from 7 to 8.5. I'm not saying this is a short term killer but I found the bounce very stressful for the rays which caused them to stop eating or not eat as much as they should and also made them less and less active over time. This stress could have led to something else.
The hydrogen sulfide could be the killer but seems weird to have a buildup in your sand if it's vaccumed twice a week.

Remove the sand and watch that ph balance out [you only need just a little bit of sand if any in the tank, when you ad an ro right to the ro/di water it will automatically bring up your ph.

But i gaurentee that ray would have died no matter what you would have done. Some phosphates would not have killed it.
Consider the conditions it was in before it got to where you bought it.
After being caught its in a fishermans boat, then to the docks to be sold, then to the exporter, then finally shipped to wholsaler or transhipper, then finally to the store.
All that time can take from 3 to 4 weeks. No food in the meantime. Some rays just cant make it thru that process,i think it was just too far gone before you even got it,just because it was eating is no assurance that it will make it.

So it's pretty much a crap shot when getting wild caught specimens if they have been in the country less than a month? Understandable but aggravating :irked:. I want to thank everyone for their advice.
