Uncommon Freshwater Shark

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes I have one over a foot, they grow fast and big, very peaceful and cool fish

There are currently two of them around 14-20" each at my lfs, and one of them has an extremely odd patch of scales where the scales are all different sizes and pointing in different directions in a circular pattern, it looks really weird and cool.

I have about 12 of them. I had them for about 2 years. The biggest one is about 8-9 inches. They are really cheap. You can buy a 2-3 inch one for about $4 and it will grow in no time.

They are common here in my area. A lot of people think they are rare but in my area, they are available at pet chain stores and fish stores that specialize in oddball fishes. You can buy them online also from a vendor here.

Right now in my area, I can buy like 10-12 of them from 3 different shops, price ranging from $4 to $11. The $11 place is marking up really high for some reason.

Right now, I can buy them online at two places, price ranging from $2 to $7.50.

In my opinion, it all comes with what you think is uncommon and what sources you use to find fish. A person's opinon on what he thinks is uncommon is common to others. So this is my opinion on how I see this fish. Others might have a different opinon but this is what I am saying and believe.

Cigar shark is also the common name and this fish goes by other common names also such as mad barb or golden shark.

It's also sultan fish in the markets; it's a food fish.

I'm looking for a new home for mine, he's over a foot now and in a 18" wide tank he seems a bit cramped.

One nice thing about mine is that he doesn't make a mess of the plants, wood, decor in the tank the way other big barbs like tinfoils do. Tinfoils I've kept constantly knocked stuff loose with their swimming, like the heater...the hoevenii barb is a lot calmer.

The reason I have it as Uncommon is b/c around here, noone's ever seen a Cigar Shark before, In my area there's only a Few LFS that sell a variety & 1 Local Marine Fish Store, either then the workers at the one LFS, noone's ever seen/heard of a Cigar Shark, fish here aren't the cheapest, b/c you can't get any fish directly from here, without importing them, I won't ever buy fish online.
You're odviously not from anywhere around this area if they're common where you are.

I had one as well. Was a cool/nice fish to watch with my silver dollars. Had 'em in a 180 (6'x2'x2'), eventually started harrassing/bullying my silver dollars and my arrow. MS had to go. As per above posts and mine looks like there are mixed reviews on them. BTW, mine was about 10-12"s.
