Its a bare bottom which makes the nitrates baffling to me. My tap is at 20-30 ppm and I never hit 80 ppm ever.... Maybe there is something big in the FX5??? (Whole shrimp ,dead feeder etc...) :screwy: Best of luck man sorry I couldnt help more.

yea thats bizarre!!!!! you must have something decaying in the tank! something is causing the high nitrates that is off. throwing some potted aquatic plants in there will help absorb the nitrates, but you really wanna figure out what the source is, not just treat the symptoms

I would recommend an algae scrubber.
Basically, for your tank size, you'd have 350gph flowing down a 10" wide, 12" high screen, with extremely high lighting (some CFL or fluorescent lights less than 4" away.) A large amount of algae grows on this screen and then you clean most of the algae off every week. This will also prevent algae growth in the tank.

Plants won't help except in extremely large quantities.

I was going to suggest that im building one right now :D

When I get home from work today I'm going to check both my fx5's and clean out the sump to make sure nothing got inside and is decaying...

What are you using for testing equipment?

I have to clean my xP2 every two weeks and my bioload is mostly bottom feeders (loaches) not predators. In other words, your fish are way messier eaters than mine. If I were to start troubleshooting your problem, I would start by cleaning the fx5 more often.
Check out chefkieths water change wizard and feeding wizard. Something definitely does not add up here.

This liquid test kit I got from my LFS, it's the only liquid one all my LFS sell, I don't know the brand,
