Currently finishing up the cycling on my 55 gallon that will be the home for my albino tiger oscar, Hedwig, until he out grows it. I think I want to go for more of a natural look but what is best to put in with them? I've been looking and as they grow they tend to be clumsy and like to rub on things so anything with possible sharp is a no go. Also that they move everything around a lot.

Tonight I am going to get the gravel, it's a river rock gravel mix. (the picture)
Should I just do a few plants and maybe a larger river rock to add the more...natural-ish look.

I am being all indecisive on setting this tank up, so any opinions on things you have had with your oscars would be great! (:

i would go with pool filter sand instead of gravel it is easier to clean than gravel
and put driftwood and some plants in there that would look cool

pool filter sand stays on the bottom and settles nicely

Yea I agree sand works better as he grows he will dig up places knock things over nd if. U move things he won't like it and remove. Stuff llol

Pool filter sand makes me so nervous! I had looked for it when I was setting up my African tank and the only kind I was able to find was the very fine powder sand. Not the larger grain kind. If I can't find it, is there another type of sand I can use? I mean besides the obnoxiously expensive stuff you can buy at fish stores. If I do find it, do I just rinse it until the water is clear?

I always liked plastic plants that I weighted down by using silicone and sinkers on the base. This allows Oscar to display his natural behavior of uprooting plants while saving me the daily task of replanting. Besides that it gives your fish something to do other than beg for food. :)

My favorite for oscars is kinda a biotope. Large grained sand, one pieve of driftwood usually branches dug into the sand so no sharp edges. And some smooth river rocks and fake plants

Tonight I am going to go look at lowes and home depot after work and see what they all have. The tank should be good to go for Hedwig next week and I am so excited to get it all set up and see his/her full personality come out.

Not super visable in the photo but the edges of all its fins and tail are black.
