undecided on decorating oscar tank

Pool filter sand makes me so nervous! I had looked for it when I was setting up my African tank and the only kind I was able to find was the very fine powder sand. Not the larger grain kind. ............

I live in the middle of nowhere, and the Ace hardware store carries pool filter sand, but you have to ask them for it bcuz it's in the back somewhere.. $12.00-13.00 for 50 lbs. Even if your store doesn't have it, they can have some thrown on their next shipment.

Looks like you've got a nice little Lutino Oscar on your hands rabbit.

I have to agree with most of everything said. Fake plants, that are easy to "re-plant" once they are moved, becuase your little O will be moving them around. A few smooth edge river rocks always look good, along with your choice of drift wood.

As far as substrate I'm a fan of the original you posted but I will admit that pool filter sand looks great, go with your gut, you can always change it.

Real plants work for me if they're tied on to driftwood. i get the odd torn leaf but i still prefer that over fake plants

thanks everyone. (: I think I am going to go with the river rock and maybe if I don't end up liking it will go with the sand in the bigger tank once he gets too big for the 55.

He's a little beat up right now :/ Mass chaos happened in my tank last night while I was sleeping and I woke up to him beat him, my dominant JD in the tank dead and the little JD who leaves everyone alone alive. The dominant JD was a bully but he has left the oscar alone with only a little bit of chasing at first and then it died down as long as the oscar didn't try to go in his log. So, I don't really know what happened but that was not pleasant to wake up to ):

I added aquarium salt and raised the temp a little and did a small water change. Oscars fins are just tore up and he's missing some scales on his one side, like he got trapped in a corner or something. He and the small jack are both all cuddled up in a pot I have in the tank together. They've gotten along great since day one, but now I'm all nervous about them. This small JD is pretty gentle and pays no attention to the other fish, just likes to hide in the same spot as the oscar, but still. I'd just like to know what happened :/ But Hedwig (the oscar) still came up for food and still is greeting me at the front of the tank when I come into the room. So I hope he will heal and be okay.

He seems to be doing a little better. When I found him this morning like that, he was on the bottom in their pouting mode leaning on the log. But now he's up and swimming and does his little excited dance by the glass when I walk by thinking I am going to feed him. Just going to cross my fingers and hope his wounds heal up soon. I feel like such a bad owner ):

Don't feel bad. I used to have a convict in with my oscars and they would spar but never anything too serious. The con ended up jumping out of the tank and dying and now my tank is much more peaceful. So the loss of your JD could be a blessing in disguise but it does still suck. Hope all works out

Well I had contacted my LFS yesterday asking if I could bring them that JD because it was becoming more apparent that she was just a JD that needed to be on her own, so was going to let her find a new home with them but I guess that won't be happening. The smaller JD seems so much happier now, zooming around the tank and coming up to greet me with the oscar as well at the glass. Before it just hid because it got chased every time it came out of hiding. So the tank is much more peaceful, and the fish are less stressed now. So in a way it was a good thing, for the fish at least.

Should I treat the oscar with melafix or just allow time and clean water to do it's thing?
