Under gravel filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i got two in a craigslist buy. it came with the tank.

i tried them, waste of time. but two pretty good powerheads came from it :)

I already know there are a lot of haters for the undergravel filter. The internet is filled with them but I do not care because I am an independent thinker and I know what is the best for my tanks!

I will always use an undergravel filter in all of my tanks.

Use what you are comfortable with.
There is nothing in particular wrong with a UGF.
And keep in mind , not all UGF/RUGF systems are created equal.
What many won't admit is every filter requires regular service.
UGF's are no exception.

There is a reason your LFS has so many of them.

I will stop short of saying I'll always have a UGF as my RUGF seems to have solved the gravel vac dilemma while still giving me the simpicity and reliability of the UGF .

I currently run a hybrid UGF in my 240 and a hybrid RUGF in my 100.
I will very likely be changing the 240 to an RUGF soon.

If I find a robust, easily maintained system that dollar for dollar can out perform them I would at least consider it.

Anyone casting baseless aspersions on ANY filtration system is merely ignorant of history, or perhaps just ignorant.;) $.02

oh god here we go again with undergravel filters...ANY knowledgeable LFS guy will tell you the negative FAR outweigh the positives with those artifacts...If all else is perfect - if the fish are not overfed, if circulation is not hindered, if the tank is not medicated, and if the gravel is cleaned frequently with water changes - success can be achieved using UG filters..Unfortunately, in most cases, something is less than perfect. Usually, after a few months of operation, the gravel begins to pack with so much silt and dirt that circulation stops and the bacteria suffocate. Since the filter still appears to be working, water quality deteriorates, usually unnoticed until it is too late. If the tank is medicated or overfed, an even more rapid die-off of the culture may occur. A speedy water change may avert disaster, but this is the sort of headache and frustration MOST fishkeepers try to avoid...If you polled everyone here UGF users would be far in the minority, and theres a reason for that..Sure they work for some people, but EVERY other kind of filter is better in all of the important aspects, facts are facts. If you have the means, avoid ugfs they are dinosaurs

tell them to get with the times...like the other 98 percent of the lfs

Why? They don't seem to have any problem providing high quality, healthy fish. Something you don't see from these technologically advance MARS central filtration systems that all the crap LFS use. Generally I won't even buy a fish out of one of those systems. Everything you buy has to be QT'd for a couple months:screwy:

im not saying they are useless but its like saying..hey dont drive a ferrari because this rusty volkswagon runs just fine...see the logic?

Yes I do, many people don't see reason to spend money on "flash" that is not needed. Generally people who need the "flash" are insecure with themselves. So what color is your Ferrari anyways?

When it comes to under gravel filters, I say different stokes for different folks. I would never have one again (I had nothing but problems), but many people use them and their fish are healthy and happy.

Go with what you know and what you can make work.
