I really like the pipe with holes in it idea.... you draw the waste out of the pipe with the uptake? That's genius. I'm already probably going to be building or buying two sponge filters to add to my tank but I think I might try this too if you don't mind me plagiarizing your idea just a little... although my idea is to connect the uptake from my canister filter as I don't have an extra HOB floating around. Has anyone tried anything like this?

A canister filter should work fine.
