Hi all, I have a ten gallon I'm going to setup for a yet to be determined fish (looking for suggestions for a moderately difficult centerpiece fish). I was wondering your thoughts on under gravel versus power filtration. Any downsides to under gravel? Are the limiting on why kind of fish I can keep?

If your fish digs, then you need something other than the UGF...for a ten gallon, a hang on power filter is simpler IMO than the UGF...

I personally would go with a small HOB filter over UG filtration.

Actually a digging fish sounds fun and my wife would really like that. Any suggestions on a freshwater digging fish?

SHELL dweller cichlids....stay away from under gravel filters IMO too much to maintain ...by the way 10 gallon are hard to take care of ,small water chem changes can cause big trouble ....you are probably better off with a 20 -29 size tank for a starter ,good luck....:)

Agree, most people hav more problems with smaller tanks. I keep a 10g for a quarantine tank, but otherwise I won't go with anything less than a 20

Hello; You can do both UGF and power filter together. I have done so many times. One advantage to this sort of setup is in the event of a power filter fail the UGF will keep a tank going quite nicely. Decades ago the early power filters were prone to fail and did so often. They are more reliable now but still do fail from time to time.

There was an interesting thread about UGF's some weeks ago on this forum. Perhaps a search will bring it up. I posted as a pro UGF member.
One post I recall made the point that both UGF's and power filters are tools and when operated properly will work well.
