Under substrate... Substrate?

Ok... Well i posted that then realized that i am going to have to siphon out all the sand anyways but thats good to know for other tanks that im not taking everything out... How do i go about preparing it... I thought of washinh it like sand but idk if it will all just float out of the bucket...

You don't need peat unless ur doing extreme planted tank, if ur planing on planting a handfull of plants all u need is good lights and fish and maybe some liquid ferts once a week. Peat will rot, actually it's already rotting that's the whole idea, u need rotting matter to provide nutrients for the plants. U don't need to prepare anything, u put it on the bottom first then the garvel or sand on top and fill with water. After some time the nutrients will be sucked up by the plants and u'll need to replace it. After how long depends if how many plants do you have, if ur dosing CO2 or not, if u add lequid fertilizers and etc.
