undergravel filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used to have one, dont really care for them so I just have a canister for additional Bio.

Back in the 80's and early 90's undergravel filtration was popular. Study has shown they really don't do much. These days, $80-100 will give the beginner a somewhat top of the line filtration unit. Undergravel filtration, ha

$80-100 will pay for this study nicely

There nothing wrong with any filter, they are a required part of any aquarium or aquatic system.

It just all depends on what type of fish you have in them, a tank with gold fish or Oscars would not work well with a undergravel filter, becuase these fish love to move or sift through the gravel which will cause a decrease in biological activity.

I'm a wet dry kinda guy myself. I started using whisper cartridge filters years ago and didn't care for them. Then went to bio wheels. those weren't bad. Then I went to fluvals and they were a pain in the arse. Then i went to wet drys for my fresh water and I'll never go back. On my salt water I use nothing but live rock. But I wouldn't suggest using live rock on a freshwater tank. Bad things might happen.

They definitely shouldn't be used as a main source of filtration!!! They create a current which some fish love and I feel they are somewhat beneficial. That is my personal opinion.

Well, like 'em or not, it is the most cheapest of all the filtration system. I am currently in transition to change all my filtration system to UGF, instead of the power hungry canisters and pumps. This is why I bought a blower for $250, and a bunch of airstones, sponges, and Perfecto UG plates. Trying to save on my electric bills which is currently $400 for 11 tanks, which has Wet and Dry systems, Canisters, and now sponges. I love fish, but the electric bill here in California is making me crazy!!!! That's with a 20% discount due to the CARE program, if you meet the income requirements. I've used UGF in the past, and they seem to do the job just fine. Trying to stay away from popular belief, and doing my own findings. :lol2: NOT cycling tanks, been there done that, if you are impatient like me, just make frequent water changes, it works .... FOR ME. before I get flamed again by some "expert". :lol2:
