Undergravel Filter

IMO sand will quickly work its way through the pad and fill in the underside of the plate.

I used a conventional setup. Not a reverse flow. I used 4 lift tubes with venturi power heads that each pushed about 300-350 GPH. I gravel washed by pressing through the substrate and pressing the bonded pad. Always got some detritus on each swipe but, nothing major.

Why not reverse flow, it is superior in every way no?

Was happy with not having all the detritus blown up into the water column or potentially clogging the intakes of my powerheads. I didn't have any secondary filtration to pull the detritus from the water column. My system was working fine without adding to the utility bill.

like oddball says, with a standard flow UGF everything goes down, never to be seen.
I've used canisters, hob, sponge filters, and now a sump, and I've never matched the clarity of water I've gotten with a UGF.

How deep is your gravel bed oddball? I prefer to run 4" of gravel with 3" being acceptable and 2" usable.
did you make your own filter plate for the 240G? or did you find one for sale??

Agreed. You'd have to use a micron sheet beneath the pad. Since fine sand is around 250 microns, you'd have to go with at least 100. With larger sand types, you could go larger.

What are your thoughts on this idea: plate under a micron sheet under a pad under 4" of sand for fish like eels or large sifting catfish (e.g., giraffe)? Assuming you can keep the eel from going under the plate, have your readings indicated this is impractical or unworkable?

Ah. :)
