Underrated Monster Fish ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm gonna have to say the Florida Gar. I had a Florida Gar by himself in a 75 gallon tank. With in 3 months he grew from 2 inches to 14 inches. He would eat at 5 inchs 100 rosey reds a week at 8 inches i had to upgrade to 100 large gold fish a week. I know i was power feeding but that guy could eat 10 fish within 10 mins the day of a feeding. :headbang2 :clap :clap :headbang2

Oh and Also the Fahaka puffer... will take any fish on and has a huge appetite. i bought him at 2 inches it's now 6 inches and fat like a football

True on this since they are native here and kinda cheap to get. But in other countries such as Japan, florida gars are treasured as a valuable oddball.

Very true, you should see some of the prices of gars over here!

use to catch longnose gar in NC over 3ft sometimes. Heard stories of them over 4ft. Quite a ferocious fish. Would love to have one in a large pond. When fishing for large catfish with sunfish in the 8" range you could feel the gar strike and pull back a fish head.

BULLHEADS........great personality, smart, aggresive and can easily attain 24" .I've had mine for a year and a half and they have tripled in length. They are deffinetly not the prettiest but they are fun to watchh and feed, they go nuts and start splashing water out of the tank as soon as they see the food container.Bullheads have been used in labratory studies on fish intelligence because of thier ability to "learn".They are pretty smart for fish.

Yeah, I agree with Bullhead about the bullhead, they are underrated. I actually came into this thread to say that most natives are underrated. Natives are among my favorite fish to keep.

Don't forget the ugly fish like chaca cats and freshwater toadfish.
