Not Monster

but cute convict behind the grass

This is the fish that started it all for me. I don't own any now and probably won't again but convicts always will have a special place in my heart.

Out of context...the end of that statement sound bad ;)

Convicts are intelligent, beautiful and tough as nails. They just so happen to breed like cockroaches lol
Usually people keep them in horrible stunted conditions, most people consider them "just feeders" It isn't often that they're even allowed to attain their full potential. When they do it's like a whole different fish entirely. I recently saw a calico long fin variety in a 90 gallon I couldn't recognize as a convict, even your run of the mill black convict can achieve an impressive nuchal hump and fin trailers that would make you wonder. Sick of hearing people bash Convicts, Oscars and JD's- there is a reason why these are the most popular cichlids of all time.

Among the various cichlids I've kept, and any other family of fish I've kept; convicts are always the most intelligent fish in my tank.

They're not doing chess or anything, but they'll study everything; working out how to manipulate it to their advantage.

Just to clarify I'm not knocking convicts. I like them myself. My little bull male reminds me of a barred amphilophs. I just think there over rated as aggressive monsters. I find most aggression to be breeding related.

Most aggression that's not food related is territorial and therefore breeding related. You would be hard pressed to find a more aggressive cichlid than a motivated convict pair. Pound for pound I can't think of anything (without tusks) more aggressive towards larger animals. If anything I find that people tend to under estimate their capabilities.
